Ontario County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Are Bats Really Blind?
You have likely heard the saying before. The one where you describe someone as being "blind as a bat." This may have become such a common phrase used by you that you never really gave it a second thought. Now you may be wondering if bats are really blind?

Not Really Blind, But Close Enough
The truth is that bats are not completely blind. Despite what the cliché says, there are over 1100 different species of bats and not one of them is completely blind. That does not mean that they see well either. These animals have very poor eyesight. It is one of the primary reasons why they hunt at nighttime. During the day, their vision would be completely useless to them, making them a sitting duck for potential predators such as owls and eagles. Instead, these animals hunted night when they have a clear advantage because of their echolocation system. This system allows them to send out an ultrasonic pulse that returns with information that allows the bat to process and respond in fractions of a second. It is truly remarkable how sophisticated the system works. It helps them to avoid potential predators, find food, and even find their way back to where they live.

But Not Blind
Even with this very sophisticated system, it would still be wrong to refer to a bat as blind. In fact, there are other types of animals whose eyesight is very much like that of a bat. This includes moles, who have terrible eyesight, but are not blind. This is not an issue for a mole, because they spend the vast majority of their time underground where it is dark already. They only come out to find food and water, and this can easily be done during the night. The same is true for the bat. Because of their very sophisticated echolocation system, it is easier for them to find food at nighttime. They are able to quickly discover insects like beetles, grasshoppers, wasps, moths, and other similar critters, then swoop down upon them to turn them into their next meal. Their eyesight is not needed at all. While having sharp and vision at night helps animals like owls and cats, this is completely unnecessary for the bat. They already have a system that gives them a clear advantage over most animals, including predators. Therefore, being unable to see very well does not hurt them in any way. Unfortunately, if you have been using this saying you may have to adjust a little bit. While a person could still be blind as a bat, it only means that their vision is terrible. There are still plenty of people who suffer from this particular problem, so it could still be appropriate. However, you no longer can refer to a person who cannot see at all as being blind as a bat. This may force you to change your vocabulary. I guess it is true that sometimes ignorance is bliss.
